Women Rising: Learning to Listen, Reclaiming Our Voice

After years of work, my first book, a memoir called “Women Rising: Learning to Listen, Reclaiming Our Voice” was published by Intervarsity Press and is now available to order! (check out the reviews on Amazon!)

The book debuted #1 in three categories on Amazon and details my time serving as a missionary working as a missionary with exploited and trafficked women and my journey of realizing my complicity in the patriarchal systems that harmed them. Through listening to their stories, they taught me that the root of their oppression was inequality—and that if we as the Church were to get serious about fighting human trafficking, we must first get serious about fighting for women’s rights.

“Meghan Tschanz has done something very important. On the one hand, she provides a wide-angle perspective on the world of twenty-first-century women and girls—those suffering human rights violations as well as women of privilege. On the other hand, and without ever losing sight of the big picture or narrowing the focus of her book to a single issue, she zooms in on stories of young girls trafficked for sex, of women enduring domestic violence, and of those denied educational opportunities. Meghan’s work is unique in that she doesn’t distinguish those women from herself and other women in the evangelical church. She masterfully weaves in her own often costly journey as a young girl growing up in the evangelical purity culture amid pervasive teaching about female submission to male leadership that diminished her sense of self and created an alarming vulnerability. Later, when confronted by horrific violence against women, a crisis of conscience compelled her to ask deeper questions. One of the many strengths of this book is that she doesn’t just describe the issues, she drills deeper to explore how the church’s gender theology is part of the problem and needs to be reexamined against this wide-angle perspective. Vital reading for both women and men.”

“In this vulnerable, engaging account of facing confusing and constricting gender roles in the church, Tschanz shows that patriarchy is not part of the world God created but is a result of sin and domination. She calls Christians to imagine a world as God meant it to be: all God’s daughters being liberated to lead, serve, and stand up for truth and justice. If you’ve ever wondered if God has good news for women, this book is for you.”

-Katelyn Beaty, author of A Woman’s Place

“With great heart and fierce determination, Meghan Tschanz confronts the stark realities of gender injustice around the world as she comes to terms with her own experiences of abuse within and beyond the church walls. Women Rising details the necessary and painful journey of sacred questioning and rediscovery that ultimately leads to Tschanz’s spiritual liberation. Through her vulnerability and truth telling, Tschanz reveals the ways God works through the unexpected to heal us and transform our lives and our faith.”

-Katey Zeh, author of Women Rise Up: Sacred Stories of Resistance for Today’s Revolution

“In Women Rising, Meghan Tschanz invites us to listen to the voices of women. Listening can lead to compassion, repentance, advocacy, and justice. Listening opens our hearts and minds to the extreme oppression and injustice many women face, all over the globe. Tschanz’s book is a clarion call to respond to gender inequality and join with women in their dignity and empowerment worldwide. Books like this change lives and can transform the world.”
